Best Pill Identifier Apps in 2026: An Honest Comparison

There isn't one best pill identifier app. The right pick depends on three things: whether you can read the imprint on the pill, whether you're willing to pay, and whether you're a clinician. One disclosure up front: we make AI Pill ID, which is one of the apps compared below, so weigh our opinions with that in mind.

App facts come from each App Store listing, checked November 2, 2026. Website facts come from our comparison pages, checked October 24, 2026. Google Play details for our app come from its listing, checked the same day. Details of how AI Pill ID works come from us. We don't score or rank the apps, and we didn't test whether other apps show a confidence score, say when they aren't sure, need an account, or offer a free first use.

How to choose in under a minute

  1. Look at the pill. Can you read a clear imprint, and do you want free? Use the Drugs.com Medication Guide app or the Drugs.com website.
  2. Imprint worn, split or missing, and you have a photo? Try a photo app, such as Smart Pill ID, Pill Identifier & Drug Search or AI Pill ID. Take a sharp photo in good light on a plain background.
  3. Work in healthcare? Look at epocrates or Medscape.
  4. Want to install nothing? Use a free website, covered below.
  5. Check the price before you tap Get. “Free to download” and “free to use” aren't the same thing.
  6. Treat every result as a shortlist. Take the pill and the result to a pharmacist.

Not sure which describes you? The short quiz below points you to a type of tool. It never names a pill.

Which kind of pill tool fits you?

Answer two or three questions. This only points to a type of tool. It never names a pill or gives medical advice.

Are you a healthcare professional?

How the six apps compare

These are the App Store (US) listings. Prices and ratings are what each listing showed on November 2, 2026. They change, so check the listing before you buy. The table scrolls sideways on a phone.

Drugs.com Medication Guide

Sold by Drugsite Trust. It searches by imprint, color and shape, so you type in what you see. It works best when the imprint is readable. It has far more ratings than any other app here, which is a real advantage. See our comparison with the Drugs.com identifier for the website version.

Smart Pill ID

Sold by BuildLoop LLC. Its listing says you can use the camera or gallery, or enter the imprint, color, shape and size by hand. It lists weekly, monthly and annual plans. The annual plan is where it beats us: AI Pill ID doesn't list one.

AI Pill ID (ours)

Sold by us. You take a photo with the camera or choose one from your gallery. The app reads color, shape, size and any visible imprint, then returns likely matches with a confidence score. It tells you when it isn't sure, and no account is needed. Free to download, and your first pill ID is free. After that it moves to a subscription.

The app has far fewer ratings than Drugs.com, epocrates, Medscape or Smart Pill ID, so there's less public feedback to judge it by.

Pill Identifier & Drug Search

Sold by FRIENDSAPP LISTING. It identifies from a photo. For someone who wants a photo option with no in-app purchases shown on its listing, it's worth a look. It has the fewest ratings of the six, so the track record is thin.

epocrates

Sold by Epocrates, and built for clinicians: pharmacist, physician, NP, PA or medical student. Its listing says it identifies by “imprint, shape, color, or image.” If you're not a clinician, you probably don't need it for a single pill.

Medscape

Sold by WebMD Health Corporation, and built for healthcare professionals. It includes a Pill Identifier. Like epocrates, it's aimed at clinicians first.

Photo search or imprint search: which do you need?

The two approaches solve different problems. An imprint search starts from the letters and numbers stamped on the pill. You type them in, add a color and a shape, and the tool lists products that match. It's quick when the code is clear. It stalls when the code is worn or partly pressed.

A photo search starts from how the pill looks. That helps when you can't type a code, but the photo matters. Use good light and a plain background. A blurry shot gives the app less to work with. A photo app can still be wrong here, so treat its result as a shortlist.

Some apps offer both. Smart Pill ID accepts a photo or typed details, and epocrates lists “imprint, shape, color, or image.” If you're not sure which route you need, an app with both options saves you switching tools.

Where the others beat us

We'd rather you pick the right tool than ours. So, plainly:

  • Drugs.com has far more ratings, a higher rating, and no in-app purchases listed. It has 17,749 ratings at 4.8, against our 363 at 4.4. If you can read the imprint, it's the obvious first stop.
  • Smart Pill ID lists an annual plan, and we don't. Its $29.99 annual option may suit a long-term user better than a weekly or monthly plan.
  • Pill Identifier & Drug Search lists no in-app purchases. Ours moves to a subscription after your first pill ID.
  • Smart Pill ID and epocrates offer photo and typed search. Ours is photo only.
  • We have fewer ratings than four of the other five. That means less evidence from other users. Drugs.com has 17,749, epocrates 7,222, Medscape 1,554 and Smart Pill ID 1,216. On Google Play, as of November 2, 2026, our listing shows no rating and 100+ downloads.
  • Clinicians have purpose-built tools. epocrates and Medscape are built for professional use. We're built for people holding one unknown pill.

Where a photo app helps is the case typed search struggles with: a pill whose imprint is too worn, small or split across sides to type in. Our guide on what to check before you pay for a pill identifier covers subscriptions, trials, cancelling and refunds, so you don't get surprised.

Free websites that need no install

You don't always need an app. Two free sites work in any phone browser, and we compared both against ours on checked pages.

  • Drugs.com Pill Identification Wizard. You type the imprint and can add color and shape. It also searches by drug name or NDC. We found no photo search. Read the full comparison.
  • WebMD Pill Identifier. You type the imprint from each side, then pick color and shape. It covers FDA-approved pills only. WebMD says it doesn't identify most vitamins and herbal supplements, illegal drugs, or drugs from outside the U.S. Read the full comparison.

The National Library of Medicine's Pillbox was retired in January 2021. If you remember using it, we explain what to use instead.

What none of these apps can do

No app, ours included, can confirm what a pill is. They judge appearance, so they can't tell you what's inside a pill. Our guide on how to tell if a pill is fake explains why looks alone aren't enough. Only a pharmacist can give you a real answer.

We also can't tell you which app is most accurate. The listing facts we checked don't show accuracy, and a star rating shows how people feel about an app, not whether its matches are right. For what the evidence does and doesn't say, read how accurate pill identifier apps really are. On Android? Our guide to pill identifier apps for Android covers what Google Play shows for each one.

The quick version

There's no single best pill identifier app. Use Drugs.com if you can read the imprint and want free, a photo app such as Smart Pill ID, Pill Identifier & Drug Search or AI Pill ID if the imprint is worn or missing, and epocrates or Medscape if you're a clinician. Check prices on the store listing, because several apps are free to download but list paid plans or in-app purchases. Treat any result as a shortlist, and let a pharmacist confirm the pill.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an app to identify pills?

Yes, several. Some search by the imprint, color and shape you type in, like the Drugs.com Medication Guide. Others work from a photo, like AI Pill ID and Pill Identifier & Drug Search, and Smart Pill ID takes a photo or typed details. Clinician tools such as epocrates and Medscape include pill identifiers too. None of them can confirm a pill. Only a pharmacist can.

What is the best free app to identify pills with a photo?

It depends on what you mean by free. As of November 2, 2026, Pill Identifier & Drug Search is a photo app listed as free with no in-app purchases shown, and the Drugs.com Medication Guide is free but searches by imprint, color and shape. Smart Pill ID and AI Pill ID are free to download and list subscription plans. With AI Pill ID, your first pill ID is free. Our guide on what to check before you pay covers the details.

Which pill identifier app is the most accurate?

We can't tell you. The listing facts we checked don't show accuracy, and ratings reflect how people feel about an app, not whether its matches are right. Our guide on how accurate pill identifier apps are explains what the evidence does and doesn't show.

Should I use a pill identifier app or a website?

If you can read the imprint, a free website such as the Drugs.com Pill Identification Wizard or the WebMD Pill Identifier works in any phone browser with nothing to install. If the imprint is worn, split across sides or missing, a photo app can still give you a shortlist. Either way, treat the result as a shortlist.

Do pill identifier apps work on Android?

Some do. As of November 2, 2026, Google Play listings exist for AI Pill ID, the Drugs.com Medication Guide, epocrates and Medscape. Our Android guide goes through them, including the data safety labels each developer declares.

Can any of these apps tell me it's safe to take a pill?

No. An app can suggest likely matches, but it can't confirm what a pill is or what's inside it. Never take a pill you can't positively identify. Bring it to a pharmacist, and if someone has already swallowed an unknown pill, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (U.S.). Call 911 for trouble breathing, collapse or a seizure.
